NBA Competitiveness Over The Last 10 Years

In case it isn't obvious, a huge passion of mine is basketball. In other words, I've basically been raised on the NBA. As I got older, I began to have more and more conversations with people about their basketball interests as well. I learned all about the many differing opinions on which time periods or "eras" of basketball were best or worst, which teams were better or worst, even which players are the absolute and definitive greatest of all-time. One thing you'll always see in the basketball world is comparisons. Different people with different values using a plethora of arguments and statistics to justify their varying opinions. So as someone who loves basketball, and loves statistics, I decided to set out on my own experiment that measures the competitiveness of all NBA teams from 2013 to 2022.

Although the goal is to showcase which teams were more or less competitive than others, while working on this project, I realized that there's a whole lot more to uncover than simply comparing competitiveness.

The Process

01

The MATH

The first thing I needed to do was determine measures of competitiveness. This involved creating my own statistics that combined existing measures to adequately measure success across all NBA teams.

02

The DATA

After working out the math, I scraped the data for each team during each season. I then applied a series of Excel formulas based on the math to better visualize the data.

03

The VIZ

Next, I loaded the entire workbook into Tableau to create interactive visualizations that best allow basketball fans to play with the data and easily compare different teams for themselves.

04

The RESULT

Finally, I added everything here, where other basketball nerds can potentially build upon my work to discover even more cool and interesting insights.
